Authorities in Midland, Texas, are conducting an intensive search for a suspect accused of firing a rifle at a police officer during a late-night traffic stop that escalated into a dangerous confrontation. The incident occurred at approximately 11:23 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, and has led to multiple law enforcement agencies joining the investigation.
According to the Midland Police Department, officers attempted to stop a vehicle in the 4800 block of Anetta. Instead of pulling over, the driver allegedly fled, leading officers on a brief pursuit through the area. The vehicle eventually came to a stop in the 4700 block of Comanche.
Police say the driver, later identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, exited the vehicle and allegedly opened fire on an officer using a rifle. Faced with the immediate threat, the officer returned fire. Despite the exchange, authorities reported that the officer was not injured.
Following the confrontation, Villarreal reportedly fled the scene in the vehicle. Officers later located the abandoned vehicle a short distance away and launched an extensive search of the surrounding area. Despite significant efforts involving multiple law enforcement resources, the suspect was not located.
As a result of the incident, Villarreal is wanted on a charge of Attempted Capital Murder of a Peace Officer. Police have warned the public not to approach him if spotted, emphasizing that he may be armed and dangerous.
